Present Music is one of the nation’s leading ensembles specializing in the commissioning and performance of new music. Its mission is to engage artists and audience members in imaginative and provocative experiences with new music through ensemble performance and education. Based in Milwaukee and founded in 1982, Present Music has worked closely with many of the nation's most exciting and important composers, and has firmly established one of the largest audiences for new music in the country.

French Connection

Jean Cocteau’s classic 1946 film, La Belle et la Bête, with live music from the Philip Glass opera for ensemble and film, meets music from French crossover sensation, Christophe Chasol. In conjunction with MAM's exhibition, Always New: The Posters of Jules Chéret.

Miller and Kentridge: Flat on your back on the dry wintry grass - a cine concert

In partnership with The Warehouse Art Museum and aligned with their exhibit: William Kentridge See for Yourself Present Music presents iconic animated short films by internationally acclaimed artist William Kentridge with new musical arrangements by South African composer and longtime Kentridge collaborator Philip Miller performed live by Present Music. South African opera singers Ann Masina (soprano) and Tshegofatso Moeng (baritone) will join present music, singing in Zulu. A newly commissioned song cycle composed by Miller and based on the poetry of Eliza Kentridge will be premiered on the program as well. Featuring a new commission and fresh arrangements, this performance tackles the history of apartheid, a struggle that Kentridge witnessed firsthand.

William Kentridge films that will be showcased include “9 Drawings for Projection,” “Paper Music,” “The Head and the Load Suite” and “Refuse the Hour.” Philip Miller and Eliza Kentridge will participate in a pre-concert conversation in Lubar Hall at MAM at 6:30 pm. Cine concert will take place in Windhover Hall at MAM at 7:30 pm.
The Bucks Native American Singing and Drumming Group open the concert.

In our second annual post-modern holiday “caroling” event, Present Music invites you to join us on a festive evening walk about the city with boomboxes, smart phones, and portable speakers creating a constantly morphing sound sculpture by Phil Kline.

The evening begins at 6 p.m. at St. Kate – The Arts Hotel with complimentary hot cider and a brief debut performance by the UWM New Music Ensemble led by Scott Corely in the Arc Theatre. Works on the program include “Stay On It” (Julius Eastman), “Spiegel im Spiegel” (Arvo Pa¨rt), and “Holiday for Reich” (Christophe Chassol).

Midden Find by Dan Trueman, featuring star Irish fiddler Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh playing the Norwegian Hardanger d’Amore; and new commission performed by multi-genre Brazilian composer, singer, and pianist Clarice Assad. In conjunction with MAM's exhibition, Scandinavian Design and the United States, 1890-1980.
